Nepal / Bhaktipur, Women's Center
Originally in Gaikhur village in Gorkha District, the Women's center has now shifted to Bhaktipur, near the capital, Kathmandu, due of the Maoist conflict. The center creates a facility nearer the capital city where there is access to transportation and materials. Bhaktipur is known for its traditional lifestyle and there is safety in the streets for the staff. Its location also makes it easy for us to have highly qualified professionals visit and train the staff with new skills. The women gain skills that that they can use to provide for their families while keeping their cultural traditions alive. Due to the economic state of Nepal, many of the women at the center have survived hardships (such as the loss of a husband or life with families plagued by alcoholism or violence, or living with physical challenges) and may be the sole member of the family able to obtain income. The bottom floor of the Women’s center opens out to the street near the old city and where visitors to Nepal have access to see our samples and purchase products. Talents The women at the center are well trained in knitting, embroidery, beadwork, quilting, and jewelry making. The staff is flexible in developing new items and quickly learn ways to transform their traditional methods into items for the market today. |
