India / Orissa, Women's Center

Orissa has the highest rate of infant and maternal mortality in India. This center built next to the hospital in Juanga, offers institutional delivery, pre- and postnatal healthcare, and education to pregnant woman in the area. The center will provide educational seminars for mothers on nutrition and hygiene for the improvement of family welfare and will develop a mobile team that will outreach seminars in neighboring villages. This will help increase confidence in the center and develop relationships with the women of the surrounding village communities. The IICP (Indian Institute for Cerebral Palsy) will visit the facility to give assistance to families who have physically or mentally challenged members.

The Woman's Center works to empower woman in the Juanga area. Women in Orissa labor under a number of social barriers (such as caste, dowry demands, and stigmas connected to single, divorced, and widowed women). The center benefits the woman struggling to recover and rebuild their lives and serves to revitalize the local traditions that have taken a low priority because of economic hardship.
