Nepal / Humla, Dr. Christopher Barley Hospital

Humla lies beneath the Himalayas in the northwestern region of Nepal in one of the most remote and unspoiled areas of the country. It is also the poorest area of Nepal and lacks modern facilities for transportation, health, sanitation, and education. Most children must work in the fields and few attend school.

The population of Humla is around 75,000. There are no roadways, and access to the region is gained only by a small airstrip in the capital, Simikot. In winter, the airport is often blocked due to heavy snowfall.

People of this area face many medical difficulties, and when they become ill, many die due to the lack of accessible medical care. Not only must patients travel to the distant cities of Nepalgunj or Kathmandu to find health care, but they will also face a heavy financial burden of paying for any medicine or treatment. It will be a challenge to bring better health care and education to this region.

Since the opening of the CB Hospital in 2004, we have treated more than 30,000 patients at our facility, with the majority being women and children! And we have since grown to be one of the most effective medical supports in this region.

Eye Camps
In July 2007, Christopher Barley Hospital, with the support of the Pokhara Himalayan Eye Hospital, provided eye examinations and cataract surgery. 1,700 patients were examined and 104 received surgery for intraocular lenses.

In September 2007, Christopher Barley Hospital had their second cataract eye outreach service with the collaboration of the Nepal Red Cross Society from Humla District. More then 3,000 patients were examined and 94 received cataract surgery.

Presently, in 2008, we are organizing regular eye examinations, surgeries, and outreach programs. We welcome your support so that we may continue these efforts.

Village Health Programs
The outreach program was initiated in August, 2007, to provide healthcare in remote villages that are only accessible by horseback. A journey which takes many days, with patients wrapped in blankets and carried through the region’s harsh climates. The first outreach program was attended by five volunteers (from Germany, New Zealand and the USA). Medicines were provided by World Response (U.K.) and contributors from New Zealand. The cost of treating each patient in this program is around two US dollars!

Volunteers
Last year we had several volunteers visit the Christopher Barley Hospital. Volunteers have come from Germany, the UK, the USA, New Zealand, Canada, and Austria and have all enjoyed a rewarding stay while joining our efforts in visiting remote locations in the Village Health Program. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in visiting the hospital or volunteering, please contact us for more information at info@citta.org.
